Khorasan wheat is an ancient wheat species that originated from the Fertile Crescent in Western Asia. It is a relative of durum wheat and is believed to have come to North America from Egypt after World War II.
It was rediscovered in 1977 by a Montana farmer who spent the next few years propagating small stocks of the original seed. In 1990, Khorasan wheat was first sold under the brand name KAMUT® in the United States.
This trademark was implemented to maintain the minimum standards for the Khorasan wheat variety and ensure consistent quality and supply in the market.
KAMUT® wheat is currently only grown as a certified organic grain and supplied to various countries around the world.
